At My Gnarled Feet 7/27/2021

I heard their call
my feathered children
and one by one
I tossed almonds into the air
as one lone crow's eyes
followed their trajectory to the ground

I don't know if he felt amazement
or if he thought
what a good forager I was

it was so pleasing to
watch him attentive
and again serene

the air has baked the world
and the fires have cooked the earth
and the trees are smoldering
gray particulates
at times
rain down from the sky
and thirst rules the land

maybe then
you might understand
the joy I felt
when he rose to my balcony
and dropped down
one almond
at my gnarled feet
